Dear reader,
Whether or not you watch
MSNBC for any reason I really don't care. With that as an opening
you may already have decided that this blog item is simply not for you.
However, if you are a person
of faith I implore you to read on!
Having just recently wrote
about the terrible tirades tossed around by the right wing talking heads
I was shocked and amazed with one of the segments on the Rachel
Maddow Show
a night or two ago. Frank
Schaeffer was a guest and he was on to speak to the hate rhetoric from
the right that is even further over the top than any we have written about
before or have ever heard.

The bumper sticker above
is sourced to an evangelical group that is quoting from the Bible and referring
to a verse found in Psalm 109: 8 and reads as follows: “May his days be
few; may another take his place of leadership. (Apparently this was
tipped to Maddow by her staff from the Christian
Science Monitor ran the story on November 16, 2009.)
If that verse is meant
to stand alone then perhaps it is only support for the idea that President
Obama would only serve this first term. If that were the truth then
it may not have been used to threaten the President.
What makes the use of this
scripture so especially egregious are the seven verses that follow in Chapter
9. Here is that passage in a complete form. Psalm 109:
8-15 which reads as follows:
8.
May his days be few; may another take his place of leadership.
9.
May his children be fatherless and his wife a widow.
10. May
his children be wandering beggars; may they be driven from their ruined
homes.
11.
May a creditor seize all he has; may strangers plunder the fruits of his
labor.
12.
May no one extend kindness to him or take pity on his fatherless children.
13.
May his descendants be cut off, their names blotted out from the next generation.
14. May
the iniquity of his fathers be remembered before the LORD; may the sin
of his mother never be blotted out.
15. May
their sins always remain before the LORD, that he may cut off the memory
of them from the earth.
Let’s put this in the proper
context, President Barack Obama is the target of more than 30 potential
death threats a day and is being protected by an increasingly over-stretched
and under-resourced Secret Service, according to a new book.
Since Mr. Obama took office,
the rate of threats against the president has increased 400 per cent from
the 3,000 a year or so under President George W. Bush, according to Ronald
Kessler, author of “In
the President's Secret Service”. Most however, are kept under
wraps because the Secret Service fears that revealing details of them would
only increase number of copycat attempts. Although most threats are not
credible, each one has to be investigated meticulously.
So connect the dots; increases
in threats to the President coupled with a seemingly justified by the Bible
passage and you have a recipe for disaster. Not only that but not
one person, no one from the conservative side of the political spectrum
has said so much as boo about this.
I would think that the
RNC Chairman Steele or anyone else with starboard credentials should say
this is over the top and request that an apology come from somewhere.
Of course I am not stupid, it isn’t going to happen. The Republican
Party has demonized this President in so many ways and truly want to see
him fail; be a one termer that never got anything done; or apparently a
President that dies in office.
Every day in every way
I become more amazed at the nature of our politics. In some way mixed
martial arts cage fighting seems less brutal and more civilized.
Ah Yes!
Politics the new blood
sport!
