Language Barriers, Part
Deux - September 9, 2009

Back on March 27, 2008 I added the entry
“What
Ever Happened to Civility?”
I stand behind that blog perhaps more
today than ever.
I just finished watching President Obama
address a Joint Session of our Congress and was so appalled when South
Carolina Republican Rep. Joe Wilson yelled out "You lie!" when the President
cleared the air regarding illegal aliens being allowed to receive benefits.
I have listened to nearly all Presidential
Addresses to Congress and I have never heard such a disrespectful moment
directed at any of our Presidents. Of course after showing his stupidity
he hastily apologized. Apology notwithstanding such disrespect toward
the Office of President is completely inexcusable. The voter of South
Carolina should reward this boor by denying his re-election.
For me, the negative use of language
stands out on each occasion when directed toward President Obama and the
agenda of his presidency. I have heard the expression during
the campaign of, “we don’t need any uppity n_____s as president!
Then we have had references to Michelle Obama and gorillas.
During the campaign and up to the moment
it would be hard to count the many times have we heard the reference to
“Socialist” or “Socialism. Name calling is only the half of it, because
we have heard accusations that are so far-fetched that only the least erudite
could accept as truth. How about the “killing of grandma” for an
example?
In the days leading up to the President’s
challenge yesterday to the students of America we have heard all the crap
about “I am not going to let my child listen to Obama’s socialist agenda”.
Excuse me when did it become socialist to encourage academic achievements.
I sure hope the children in those families become better educated than
their parents so that when they come of age they can realize how politically
stupid these parent’s were.
Obviously if this concerns you as it
does me, asking the good question might be how, where or when did this
start? Many can only speculate regarding its actual origins
but I strongly believe that Lee
Atwater and Karl
Rove should
get all the credit. Both men have used the techniques of character
assassination as well as “dirty tricks” to achieve the goals of advancing
their agendas and we can probably point to Watergate as a clear example.
Republicans like Atwater and Rove as
well as this South Carolina Congressman are the precise reason I am now
a Democrat after 40 slavish years of loyally listening to lies, lies, and
more lies!
