Just Who is in Charge
Here? April 29, 2009

In several earlier rants I stated that
2008 marked my departure from the Republican Party. On either a local
or global basis my change of allegiance after 40 years went totally under
the radar because certainly my political leaning is hardly anything worthy
of one moment of press time.
However, the defection from the GOP
yesterday of Senator Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania is attracting loads
of ink and verbiage, and well it should for a party change of this magnitude
deserves every bit of press.
Of course, everyone to starboard politically
as well as a few PA Senator “wannabe’s” is already blasting him for being
a political opportunist. He has been labeled as only being interested
in his own political life than the interests of the Commonwealth.
Those that are demeaning his action
perhaps did not listen closely enough to his press conference when he announced
his decision. Here is the direct quote that I am referring to, "I
am unwilling to have my 29-year Senate record judged by the Pennsylvania
Republican primary electorate,"
I know exactly what he meant because
I can substitute an entity in his statement above. Try this on for
size, "I am unwilling to have my 29-year Senate record judged by the Club
for Growth (CFG)." Simply stated he means that the CFG has targeted
him for replacement by someone more in line with the neo-cons that now
decide the Republican agenda.
If there is any doubt that the CFG had
placed him on the “hit” list then look at who they had identified to challenge
the Senator in the Republican Party…. former PA Congressman Pat Toomey.
It can hardly be a coincidence that Toomey resigned as President of the
CFG on April 13th, 2009 and on April 15th 2009 was subsequently endorsed
by that group to challenge Specter in 2010 Primary.
Regardless of their stated objectives
the true agenda of this Political Action Committee is to “purify” the Republican
Party by ridding it of anyone that does not reflect the neo-conservative
point of view. There is plenty of evidence to support this.
In a number of instances and enumerated by Senator Specter, the CFG endorsed
and financed the primary campaigns of a number of “Neo-Cons” that were
certain losers in the General Election and met their goal of purging the
“bilge.”
IOW purification was more important
than victory and it is exactly this effort to move the Republican Party
to the extreme right that caused Senator Specter and me to make our move
to the Democratic Party. I guess we are in good company along with
200,000 of our fellow Pennsylvanians.
So who is in charge of the GOP anyway?
It certainly isn’t anyone like the Senator
or I because we believe that making room under a tent is far better than
making room under an umbrella!
