“Do Blondes Have More Fun?”  -  November 11, 2008

For who knows how many eons the expression “Blondes have more fun!” has existed as the tag line for a hair color commercial, and a theme for many women.  I think it is quite likely the reason someone decided that brunette jokes would work better as blonde jokes and goodness knows I have heard my share that's for sure.

I enjoy my hair color immensely and it accrues to me thanks to L'Oreal and their color NB10b "Ultra Natural Blonde".  Yes, I do color my hair.  If I didn't I would probably look my age (which I will not state).  "Growing old gracefully" (origin unknown) simply is not my style, I pledge to go kicking and screaming during the aging process.

In any case I began coloring and lightening my locks gradually in the months after I discovered that the graying of Joanne was proceeding apace.  In time as I attempted ever lighter colors I finally arrived at the color you see in the picture.  It has been the same color for about 8 years, and to say I love it is understating my feelings.

It attracts attention, both positive and negative.  Experienced evidence tells me that even when I am grungy looking on a quick trip to the grocery store that my hair color diverts attention.  People could easily regard me with volumes of disdain for dressing casually, but that doesn’t happen.  Of course men always turn their heads to gawk when I pass, and a great many darker skinned humans seem to find it quite magnetic.

This brings me to an interesting consequence that derives for maintaining this color.  I do get many compliments; the majority of them involve the use of the words I like your color.  However, of those that say, "I absolutely love your hair color" each and every one of them has been a black woman.  No white, oriental or Hispanic person has ever been that effusive about the color!

When presented with such deferential declarations I must concede that it confounds me completely and I am lead to inquire "Why is it then that only black females rave so much about my hair color?"  The only thought that comes to my mind is that the hair color represents such a complete contrast for each complimentary commentator.  I would further speculate that a secret desire would be that they could get away with it!

So to anyone that might read this entry, your homework for the day is to give me your thoughts as to why do these women react to my hair color in such a vociferous manner!  What do you think?

Suffice it to say that my tresses are a true source of pleasure for me so on that basis I must confess that blondes do have more fun!
